Accountability Status for Silas Wood

Posted Date: 3/28/25 (8:30 PM)

Dear Silas Wood Families,

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has recently released accountability ratings for school districts and individual schools as part of the Federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). These ratings use various indicators, including NYS assessments and the number of students taking State tests, to measure performance. Schools and districts are designated as “target” if any subgroup of students underperforms compared to similar students across New York State.

Silas Wood has been designated as a target school due to the performance of our English Language Learners (ELLs), relative to ELLs in other schools across the State. Additionally, South Huntington has been designated as a target district based on the 3-8 performance of our Hispanic students compared to Hispanic students in other districts Statewide.

As part of this designation, we are required to develop both a school-wide and district-wide improvement plan. This plan will include strategies to better prepare our students for the NYS ELA and Math assessments. At Silas Wood, we are already focused on reviewing our data and collaborating with staff, parents, and students to identify areas for growth while building on our strengths.

We are committed to keeping you informed of our progress as we work together toward these improvements. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards,
Stephen Toto, Principal
